Why is an Unbreakable Speculum important?

It is critical for both the clinician and patient that a vaginal speculum must not break (or shatter) within the vaginal cavity. The material construction of Instraspec® and Ultraspec® speculums ensure that this extremely serious device malfunction does not happen in normal use.

Insertion of a speculum can invoke a condition known as Vaginismus, an extremely painful spontaneous involuntary contraction of the vaginal musculature, which affects approximately 1 in 500 women. This unforeseen clinical event can exert significant external force on the walls of the speculum, which in turn can cause low strength speculum beaks to break or shatter.

High-Strength Vaginal Speculum

Vernacare’s plastic, single-use vaginal speculums are manufactured from a high-strength polymer, which affords it specific, clinically relevant, technical attributes. These enhanced physical properties help differentiate Vernacare speculums from lowcost, low strength plastic vaginal speculums which are typically manufactured from Polystyrene,

Polyvinyl Chloride or Polythene. The unbreakable* design of the Instraspec®, Ultraspec®, and EcoGold® speculums’ has been independently tested by the Surgical Material Testing Laboratory.
